Through Our Eyes: Reflections on Climate Justice

How do the effects of climate change impact our daily lives and communities? How can we use art to raise awareness on the climate crisis and spark climate justice dialogue? 

“Through Our Eyes: Reflections on Climate Justice” is a Youth Artist Project with Artist-in-Residence Sarah Plotkin exploring climate justice, theater, performance, storytelling, and activism. Youth Artists created performance-based artwork that celebrates climate justice work and sparks dialogue and action about the ongoing issues of the climate crisis.

What is Climate Justice? Climate Justice (CJ) looks at the climate crisis through the lens of equality and human rights as a social justice issue. It means finding solutions to the climate crisis that create a more equitable, just, and sustainable world.

Using documentary theater and other performance-based practices, this project seeks to amplify stories of climate justice and learned how climate change is directly affecting our communities. Over the course of 5 weeks, Youth Artists learned about climate justice work happening in Boston and interviewed local leaders. From these interviews, they created artistic responses using movement, improvisation, writing, visual art, and more to reflect on the leader’s contributions and explore their own experiences with the climate crisis. In the end, they presented an interactive public showcase of their responses.
